The IDF successfully targeted a terrorist operative involved in recent attacks against Israel and in the planning of further attacks in the coming days. Ahmad Za’anin, a senior operative in the PFLP terror organization was in the northern Gaza Strip when an IAF aircraft carried out the mission. The IDF operated in order to eliminate an imminent threat to the lives of Israeli civilians.
Ahmad Za’anin was a key Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) operative in the Gaza Strip who has actively planned to launch rockets at Israeli communities in the south of Israel. Amongst his most recent attack was the launching of rockets during the funeral of Israel’s former Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, on January 15.
Since 2009 Za’anin, with cooperation from other terror bodies in the Gaza Strip, has endorsed numerous attacks against Israel, such as sniping attacks and detonating explosive devices against IDF soldiers. In his earlier days, Za’anin was affiliated with the Islamic Palestinian Jihad, during which the terrorist operated towards the execution of terror attacks, most of which were rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers.
Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, IDF Spokesman: “To tolerate Gaza rocket attacks would be to succumb to extremist aggression. It is the IDF’s moral obligation and right to defend its soldiers and civilians from the deadly actions and intentions of terrorists of the likes of Zaanin.”
