A joint combat demonstration took place today, Tuesday, February 1st , 2011, at the IDF ground forces training base in Shizafon. The IDF Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, visited the demonstration as part of his series of departing visits from the IDF.
The joint combat demonstration is a display of the Ground Forces’ capabilities, in which Officer School Cadets from the infantry, engineering, armoured and artillery corps perform exercises that combine various and diverse combat techniques. These include: urban warfare, a complex obstacle course, artillery support and invasion techniques, along with aerial support from the IAF which include medical evacuations and aerial dropped supplies.
As part of the event, following the demonstration, an honorary guard was held for Lt. Gen. Ashkenazi. Upon conclusion of the visit, soldiers and commanders of the Ground Forces Command bid farewell to the chief of the General Staff by exhibiting a special exercise, combining all aspects of the ground forces.
During the demonstration, Lt. Gen. Ashkenazi stated: “It is exciting to bid farewell to the ground forces, of which I was once a cadet, and forever will feel at home. The security situation around us can change at any time, it is enough only to look at Egypt… I leave with a strong sense of belief in you and certainty that you understand the responsibilities placed upon your shoulders. ”
Chief of the Ground Forces Command, Maj. Gen. Shlomo Turgeman, commented to Lt. Gen. Ashkenazi that: “Today, nobody questions the quality of the IDF and its readiness to meet its different challenges. Words cannot express our appreciation for you as an officer, a citizen and a human being. We thank you for teaching us on building up our forces, the art of commanding, caring for our troops, for humbleness, honesty, and in always striving to doing more .”
