Sirens sounded in the city of Netivot shortly after the onset of Shabbat as a grad rocket launched by Hamas terrorists from Gaza hit a house, causing considerable damage.
In the past week these sirens have been a common occurrence, as rocket fire from the Gaza Strip has increased significantly. Over 40 rockets this past week alone hit Israeli soil, endangering the lives of civilians.
Since the beginning of 2012, over 500 rockets directed from Gaza have hit Israel. This recent increase in rocket fire is allegedly attributed to a recent Israeli Air Force attack on a wanted terror operative a week ago.
Last Sunday the Israeli Air Force targeted Tala’at Halil Muhammad Jarbi, a Global Jihad operative and member of the Hashura Council of the Martyrs of Jerusalem, who was involved in extensive terrorist activity. He was wanted for targeting Israeli civilians and security forces, as well as planning a complex attack intended to take place along the Sinai border. Following this joint IAF-ISA operation, rocket fire from Gaza increased and led to a number of rocket launches which were thwarted by the IAF.
On Monday morning the IAF targeted Hamas terror activity sites and terrorist squads responsible for rocket fire from Gaza. Another targeting operation took place on Wednesday, destroying a terror tunnel in the northern part of the Gaza Strip . Rocket launchings from Gaza increased and on Thursday the Israeli Air Force thwarted a terror activity site in the final preparations to fire rockets into Israel.
Soon to follow was a deluge of rocket fire that damaged a home in Netivot on Friday evening, causing three shock victims, one which was evacuated to the hospital. In response, the IAF targeted a terror activity site in the northern Gaza Strip, and two terror activity sites in the central Strip.
On Saturday evening, a joint IAF-ISA operation targeted terror operative Hisham Saidani, one of the founders of the Hashura Council of the Mujahideen, a terrorist organization which operates under the umbrella of Global Jihad. The Hashura Council of the Mujahideen was responsible for a series of terror attacks, including the 2009 attack on an IDF patrol, killing an IDF NCO and severely injuring an officer. Saidani had been planning a complex attack to be carried out along the Sinai border.
The IDF will not tolerate any attempt by terrorist groups to target Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will continue to operate against those who use terror against the State of Israel. The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.
