Meet the New Female Combat Officers of the IDF

Yesterday, October 26, 2011, a Ground Forces officer’ course graduation ceremony was held at the officer training base in Mitzpe Ramon.

386 cadets finished the course, including 27 female combat officers

Here is the story of a few of the  new female combat officers of the IDF:

2nd Lt. Orien Levi, Graduated with Honors.

Orian Levy is 19 years old, and lives in Bet Shemesh. She enlisted in 2009, to be a combat soldier at the MLRS battalion in the Artillery Corps. Even though she serves in a unit that specializes in operating heavy weaponry, she states that “female combat soldiers are treated just the same as male ones.” It was very important to her to go to officer’s course, from which she graduated with honors, in order to instill values in her soldiers.
Her motto is: “I’ve always been there for my friends, and I will be there for my future soldiers.” Continue reading “Meet the New Female Combat Officers of the IDF” »

In Response to Rocket Fire, IAF Targets Terror Activity Sites in the Gaza Strip

In response to the firing of a rocket that hit an open territory near the city of Ashdod last night, the IAF targeted three terror activity sites in the central Gaza Strip and an additional weapons storage facility in the southern Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed.

The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will continue to operate with strength and determination against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel. The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.

The squad was previously known to the IDF due to its attempt in carrying out a terror attack on the Israel-Egypt border. A direct hit was confirmed.

The terrorist squad included: Rami Daoud Jabar Khafarna, born 1984, a Global Jihad-affiliated terrorist from Jabalia. Khafarna is a former member of the Hamas military wing who is known to have taken part in firing rockets at Israel; Hazam Mahmad Sa’adi Al-Shakr, born 1985, a Global Jihad-affiliated terrorist from Beit Hanoun, is a former member of the Hamas terror organization. Urban Warfare Training Center – Simulating the Modern Battle-Field

After research conducted following operation ‘Defensive Shield’ (2002) and the Second Lebanon War (2006), the IDF Ground-Forces Command decided to build a training facility to answer the IDF’s needs for a modern urban warfare training.
After understanding that the combat field has made the transition from open territory to closed quarters and clearly bordered urban spaces, the Urban Warfare Training Center (UWTC) was constructed.

The UWTC is now fully operational and gives the Israeli soldier the tools they need before taking foot in the battle-fields of the 21st century.

The training center, considered to be one of the world’s most advanced army facilities, consists of over 600 individual structures, simulating an authentic, modern desert city. Among the structures, one can find buildings ranging from eight-story-high, fully-populated complexes to shabby shacks, schools, city-stores, public buildings and market places.

GOC Central Command, Major General Avi Mizrahi, stated during the ceremony: “For the past two years, the Judea and Samaria Division was blessed with Nitsan, a true commander and leader. His professionalism, humility, level-headedness and sharp thinking led the division during a challenging and complex time, and he steered it safely and without hesitation towards achieving its goals with a clear understanding of its main priorities.

You have created a far better operational scenario than that which existed prior to your appointment, and gave the Israeli home front and the Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria a sense of security.

Personal Address from the IDF Chief of the General Staff

IDF soldiers and commanders, in regular and reserve service:

On June 24th, 2006, Team 2, from the 188th armored brigade in the “Barak” division of the Infantry Corps left for operational activity along the Gaza border, near Kerem Shalom. During the course of their mission, on the morning of June 25th, the tank’s crew came under attack by terrorists. During this attack the tank’s commander, Lieutenant Hanan Barak and Staff Sergeant Pabel Slozker, may they rest in peace, were killed. Staff sergeant Roei Amitai was injured and Staff Sergeant Gilad Shalit was abducted. Today, upon the return of Gilad Shalit to his country, his nation and his family, their mission is completed.

During the five years in which Gilad Shalit was held captive by Hamas, IDF soldiers and commanders never cease their efforts to advance his return. Together with other security authorities, we have done all that is possible on the intelligence, operational and political levels. Over these years we have time and time again looked into the eyes of the Shalit family and vowed that we will not rest until their son has returned.

The entire process, and the efforts of the negotiating team in particular, emphasize the commitment of the State of Israel and the IDF to do whatever is necessary to bring back an IDF soldier who was sent on a mission and did not return. This commitment is derived from the IDF value of camaraderie, which is and will always remain a core principal in the IDF operational and moral code.  This commitment reflects the value of responsibility, dedication to the mission, our utmost commitment to our soldiers, which is second to no other military in the world, and perhaps most of all- the sanctity of life.

This difficult decision was made by the Israeli Government and carried out after considering all factors and with a full understanding of the heavy toll. Our hearts go out to the families of those harmed in the various terror attacks and we pledge to continue our constant effort to defend the State of Israel.

To the IDF’s soldiers and commanders:

Israel’s enemies constantly attempt to harm the citizens of Israel and Israel’s sovereignty. The IDF will stand firm and with resilience against all threats to the State of Israel. We are prepared to face any challenge emanating from this agreement and will firmly operate against anyone who endangers our state and our citizens.

We will continue to do everything in our power to bring back all those missing or held captive. We pledge to their families that we will never tire of our efforts and will examine any shred of information regarding their whereabouts. That is our duty.

SFC Gilad Shalit:

The commanders and soldiers of the IDF respect you and are proud of your tenacity and resilience throughout these years. We will continue to support you for as long as you need.

On behalf of your fellow soldiers, who carry on their shoulders your generation’s guardianship of the country, whether in the land, sea or air, in their offices or in the field, throughout the country, whether in their tanks, or artillery batteries, in their planes or in their ships – in the name of the whole of the IDF, I congratulate you and your family upon your return to us.
