[vodpod id=Video.5770213&w=425&h=350&fv=]

Update:
According to shipment documents and crew questioning, the vessel initially departed from the Lattakia Port in Syria, and then proceeded to Mersin Port in Turkey. The IDF emphasizes that Turkey has no connection to this incident regarding the weaponry uncovered on-board.

A short while ago, IDF Navy fighters intercepted the cargo vessel “Victoria” loaded with various weaponry. According to assessments, the weaponry on-board the vessel was intended for the use of terror organizations operating in the Gaza Strip. The vessel, flying under a Liberian flag, was intercepted some 200 miles west of Israel’s coast. This incident was part of the Navy’s routine activity to maintain security and prevent arms smuggling, in light of IDF security assessments.

The force was met with no resistance from the crew on-board and the vessel is now being led by the Israeli Navy to the Israeli port in Ashdod for further searches and detailed inspection of the cargo.

The vessel was on its way from Mersin Port in Turkey to Alexandria Port in Egypt. The IDF would like to note that Turkey is not tied to the incident in any way.

The operation was approved as necessary in accordance with government directives in light of the Chief of the General Staff’s recommendations.

Earlier this morning, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz updated the Minister of Defense, Mr. Ehud Barak, about the findings on-board the vessel.

The IDF and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs alerted about the interception of the “Victoria” to the German authorities, due to the German ownership of the ship. In addition, the government of Liberia, whose flag it was flying under, was notified, as well as France, due to the French shipping company.

The operation was under the command of the IDF Navy Commander, Maj. Gen. Eliezer Marom, and the interception was under the command of the Navy Special Forces Commander.

Confidence Building Measures in the West Bank and the Impact on the Palestinian Economy

The Palestinian economy in the West Bank continues to exhibit significant growth, with a 9% GDP increase in 2010. Thousands of new shops opened throughout the region including 600 new businesses in the city of Jenin alone. Approximately 5.5% of the GDP in the West Bank comes from Israeli Arabs, of which 3.3 million visited the Palestinian cities last year.

Two years ago as part of Israeli confidence building measures in the West Bank, Israeli Arabs experienced free access to Palestinian cities in the West Bank and an expansion of the hours in which crossings were open. The primary goal of these confidence building measures is to stimulate economic growth for the local Palestinian population.

The Civil Administration of Judea and Samaria, the Israeli body responsible for administering and coordinating civilian and humanitarian needs in the area, as well as security forces in the West Bank, view the economic improvement as a direct result of the relatively quiet security situation.

Women in the IDF

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4kjNIL8prM]

In celebration of International Women’s Day, and in honor of the contribution women make to the IDF, the following is a small portion of the interesting and noteworthy roles women hold throughout their service. Women have served in the IDF since its inception, and in Israeli defense organizations before the creation of the State of Israel (exceptional women such as Hannah Senesh and Sarah Aaronsohn, for example). Each year, 1,500 female combat soldiers are drafted into the IDF, a number which has remained consistent in recent years. Female soldiers also play crucial roles in command and control positions, commanding positions, and many others.

Examples of Units and Positions of Women in the IDF

  • Battalion Signal Officer - The Battalion Signal Officer is responsible for operating and maintenance of communications in a battalion, a central and important role within the force. During emergency situations, the Battalion Signal Officer stands side by side with the Battalion Commander, operating and managing communications during combat.
  • 76th Battalion of the Combat Engineering Brigade – As part of the Combat Engineering Brigade, the 76th battalion is a unique battalion which combines male and female soldiers, whose job is to neutralize Atomic Biological Chemical (ABC) warfare threats in the battlefield during combat in real time. These soldiers go into the heart of enemy territory along with other combat troops during wartime, and help protect them from unconventional weapons.
  • 334th Battalion of the Artillery Corps – The 334th battalion specializes in MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) launchers and has a primary role in all artillery operations. All positions in the Artillery Corps are open to women, including both staff and combat roles. Women who serve in combat units complete advanced training, at the end of which they are integrated into continuous security operations across Israel. They commit themselves to an additional 12 months of mandatory military service, as well as to reserve duty.
  • Electronic Warfare Combat Soldier - Electronic Warfare combat soldiers serve in unique and highly classified positions.  The women in Electronic Warfare undergo team building military tests, advanced combat training, and a half year course in which they acquire the skills of their profession.
  • Caracal Battalion -  The Caracal Battalion is a highly  operational combat force which combines both male and female soldiers, tasked with guarding the borders of Israel with Egypt and Jordan. The unit undergoes training like any combat infantry and all of its soldiers sign up for three years of service, in accordance with a worldview which demands total gender equality.
  • Oketz Unit -  This canine special forces unit includes both male and female soldiers, who are partnered with dogs whom they personally train and with whom they embark on operational activities. The dogs – along with their owners – sniff out explosives, track down terrorists, and neutralize security threats.
  • Aerial Defense System Operator – All units in the Aerial Defense System are open to women, who may serve in combat or command and control roles and who defend the skies of Israel by intercepting aircraft, missiles, and rockets. This includes manning the new Iron Dome system, which is due to become operational in the coming months.
  • In-Flight Teleprocessor - Soldiers operate unique telecommunications devices on planes during flights in order to enable communication in remote areas. Female soldiers serving in this position operate during routine activities and during wartime. The position demands great skill and professionalism, and the soldiers serving in it must operate in extremely stressful conditions. They undergo courses in both teleprocessing and paratrooper capacities.
  • IAF Pilots – Since the revolutionary lawsuit of Alice Miller, who sought to be the first IAF pilot, the pilot’s course became open to women and welcomed them into its ranks. The last course alone saw two fighter pilots and one navigator successfully graduate.

Officer and Commanding Roles

Approximately half of all soldiers in officer courses are women. During the last three years:

  • An average of 55% of all staff officers in the Officers Training Course were women.
  • An average of 53% of those OTC graduates went on to become officers in combat support positions.
  • An average of 3% of all combat officers were women. In the last decade there has been an increase in the percentage of women combat officers.

In the last several years alone, women in the IDF : Achieved high-ranking positions, integrated themselves successfully into combat units, protected the country’s borders, revolutionized military lawdirectly impacted national security. You can read more about the personal stories of women serving in the IDF here.

In Response to Rocket Fire, IAF Targets Gaza Strip Terror Sites

Overnight, IAF aircraft targeted a terror tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip and two terror activity sites in the central Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed and secondary blasts were identified in targeting the terror tunnel.

The terror tunnel was intended to be used by terrorists to infiltrate into Israel and to execute terror attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers.

The targeting of the sites was in response to yesterday’s rocket fire into Israeli territory.

The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians or IDF soldiers, and will continue to respond to anyone who utilizes terror against Israel. The IDF holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for maintaining the calm in the Gaza Strip and for any terrorist activity emanating from it.

Civil Administration Distributed 90,000 NIS Worth of Medical Equipment to Palestinians with Disabilities in 2010

Earlier in 2010, the Civil Administration announced the availability of special funds to Palestinians with special needs.  To allocate these funds, the Welfare Review Committee was established to review the dozens of applications sent in response. The Committee approved each and every request, spending over 90,000 NIS on wheelchairs, hearing devices, prosthetics, and other types of medical equipment.

The Civil Administration has recently announced an increase in allotted funds for 2011 and is currently welcoming applications from private individuals, NGOs, and international organizations on behalf of Palestinians with disabilities. Requests are sent to the Civil Administration’s Staff Officer for Welfare which are to include background information, medical history, and personal details regarding the requesting individual, along with the relevant information about the needed equipment.

The Civil Administration of Judea and Samaria is responsible for administering and coordinating civilian and humanitarian needs in the area and is comprised of various staff offices working alongside the Palestinian Authority, the Palestinian population, the IDF and Israeli authorities, as well as with international organizations and NGOs to fulfill these needs.

The Civil Administration is committed to continue improving the ability of answering the need of Palestinians requiring medical assistance in the West Bank, and anticipates processing and approving many more such requests in 2011.
