Summary of IDF Activity in the Carmel Disaster Area, 5 Dec 2010

Over the weekend Israel Defense Forces continued assisting the rescue and security forces with firefighting efforts in the Carmel disaster area.

Two hundred IDF Home Front Command reservist firefighters teamed up with the rescue and security forces in the attempts to contain the fire.

Reserve officers from the liaison unit enlisted to facilitate cooperation and coordinate between the forces and the residents in the disaster area.

Firefighter delegations from Bulgaria and Greece teamed up with the Israeli emergency forces operating in the disaster area. The IDF Home Front Command coordinated the integration of the various teams and took care of the foreign firefighters’ housing and accommodation.

Hundreds of IDF soldiers helped evacuate effected communities and special population assistance centers, as well as taking on various search and policing assignments.
Dozens of medical personnel including paramedics and doctors are providing medical aid and identifying casualties of the fire.

Extensive aerial firefighting activity was coordinated with the emergency rescue teams on the ground. The Israeli Air Force has been coordinating all aerial teams operating in order to contain the fire as well as operating 2-4 observational aircrafts to direct ground forces fighting the fire. In addition the IAF has been coordinating the arrival and incorporation of all foreign firefighting aerial assistance.

As of Saturday evening, December 4, 3 firefighting helicopters, 12 firefighting planes and 6 transport helicopters from Greece, Bulgaria, Cypress, Britain, Turkey, Russia, France, Italy and Switzerland had arrived in Israel.

The head of the IDF Personnel Branch, Maj. Gen. Avi Zamir, called up 200 reserve officers from the casualty assistance department to assist the Israel Prison Service. Together they have been notifying the families of casualties who died when a Prison Service bus caught on fire on Thursday, 2 December. All the casualties will be buried with full honors in military ceremonies.

The C4I branch is supplying full coverage of telecommunication systems to the IDF forces, emergency services, Israel Fire and Rescue Services and the Israel police operating in the disaster zone. In addition, the C4I forces are supporting VC, aerial video and IAF information systems for all rescue and firefighting operations.

IAF helicopters and airplanes, thousands of soldiers, hundreds of vehicles, dozens of eengineering machines and military firefighter vehicles have been operating on site since Thursday in order to assist in the rescue efforts.

The heads of the Education and Youth Corps were instructed to work with the Jewish National Fund (JNF) to coordinate IDF participation for forest recovery activities in the Carmel area, which will begin as soon as the fires have been fully contained.

Summary of Aerial Firefighting Activity in the Carmel Disaster Area, 4 Dec 2010

Since Thursday, December 2, the Israel Air Force AF has been coordinating the arrival and incorporation of foreign firefighting aerial assistance. Dozens of firefighting airplanes and helicopters, as well as supply planes carrying equipment and professional teams and experts from different countries have arrived in order to assist in fighting the Carmel fires.

Starting Friday morning, comprehensive aerial firefighting activity has been conducted in coordination with the security and rescue teams operating on the ground. The IAF organized an emergency operations center in order to coordinate and utilize all Israeli and foreign aerial support for fighting the fire.

Large numbers of IAF support teams have been dispatched in order to assist the teams in the disaster area:

  • Command and Control teams
  • IDF soldiers and officers to man and assist in the situation room located at Haifa University
  • IAF aerial coordination and guidance teams
  • 2-4 observational aircrafts to direct ground forces fighting the fire
  • Foreign assistance aircrafts have been directed to land at IAF air bases.

The IAF is expecting further foreign assistance and aircrafts from several additional countries including Switzerland, Russia, Netherlands, France, Azerbaijan and Romania. In addition, a large civilian American firefighting plane is expected to land shortly in the Ben Gurion airport.

Summary of IDF Activity in the Carmel Disaster Area and Arrival of Foreign Aid, 3 Dec 2010

As of yesterday noon, the IDF is operating to assist forces in the Carmel on their mission to extinguish the deadly fire in the area and evacuate the area’s residents, under the command of the Israel Police.

Early this morning, five planes from Greece carrying staff and equipment, a plane and helicopter from Cyprus, and a Bulgarian plane carrying approximtely 100 fire fighters landed in the Ramat David Air Force Base. The Bulgarian fire fighters will deploy at an IDF Home Front Command base, from which they will leave for their designated missions led by Israeli fire fighters.

GOC Home Front Command, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan is touring the area and commanding the forces operating in it.

Overnight, IDF search and rescue teams scanned the area of Tirat Ha’Carmel and Hof Ha’Carmel, installed lighting posts and helped in the evacuation of a retirement community. Home Front Command teams are also handling hazardous materials in the area.

Two hundred Home Front Command fire fighters in reserve were recruited in order to assist all forces operating in the area.

trucks, etc. IAF aircrafts assist in illuminating the area in order to assist the teams extinguishing the blaze, paramedics and doctors are treating those who were injured and teams of the IDF Personnel Directorate and Medical Corps are helping identify those who died in the fire.

As a result of the fire, three IDF bases in the area were evacuated yesterday.

IDF Assists Forces in the Carmel Disaster Area, 3 Dec 2010

IDF forces are constantly assisting the efforts in the Carmel disaster area. In addition, teams of the Home Front Command are currently dealing with hazardous materials on the scene.

Since the beginning of the incident, a substantial number of IDF forces have been operating, including infantry battalions, search and rescue teams, cranes, vehicles, bulldozers, IDF fire trucks, etc.

IAF helicopters are currently assisting in illuminating the area to assist the teams extinguishing the blaze, paramedics and doctors are treating those who were injured and teams of the IDF Personnel Directorate and Medical Corps will identify those who died in the fire.

IDF Thwarts Terror Attack in Northern Gaza Strip, 2 Dec 2010

Overnight, an IDF force identified a number of armed Palestinians near the security fence in the Northern Gaza Strip. An IAF aircraft, accompanied by an IDF ground force using tank shells, fired towards the militants, identifying a hit. No casualties were caused amongst IDF forces.

Since the beginning of 2010, approximately 100 different terror-related incidents took place near the security fence surrounding the Gaza Strip, an average of an incident every three days.

The IDF holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for maintaining the calm in the Gaza Strip and for any terrorist activity emanating from it. The IDF will also continue to respond harshly to any attempt to use terror against the State of Israel.

Update: IDF soldiers searching the area of last night’s incident in the northern Gaza Strip discovered the bodies of two terrorists of the Islamic Jihad organization, and on them light weapons, uniforms and an explosive device.
