60 Years of Women’s Service in the IDF, 18 Aug 2010

The following presentation outlines the role women have taken in the army throughout the history of the Israel Defense Forces. Women have always taken part in Israel’s growing military, from the founding of state in 1948 to the modern army of today. In the contemporary IDF, more and more roles are opening up to women as an increasing amount of units see the value in female combat soldiers.

Before the establishment of the state, women served in combat roles in the militias that would be the Israel Defense Forces. However, when the IDF was created women served primarily in roles such as educators and administrators. Then, during the Yom Kippur War (1973), due to a growing need for ground forces, women were needed in roles in the field. They served as combat instructors, operations sergeants, and even officers.

Above you’ll find interviews with women on the field in charge of combat training equipment, as gunnery instructors for the armored force, as soldiers in the light infantry battalion, as commanders of field intelligence forces and more.

In the Air Force, women were permitted to become fighter pilots alongside men in 1995 and today women also serve as avionics technicians, battery commanders in the anti aircraft forces and various other roles.

The Navy also sees women taking an active role in its forces. Women can be found in port security teams and monitoring naval boarders, among others.

Along with striving to expand opportunities, the IDF takes an active role in assuring women’s health and well-being. The Israeli army has zero tolerance for sexual harassment and supports women’s health needs in their military service with various clinics for special needs.

As the Israel Defense Forces evolves into a stronger, smarter army, so do the opportunities of those women serving in it. One of the most developed armies in the world today, the IDF’s emphasis on women’s rights sets it apart as an equal-opportunity world where women are challenged to make the most of their service whether it be in combat or non-combat roles.

The Israel Air Force struck a weapons manufacturing site in the central Gaza Strip, two weapons-smuggling tunnels and a terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip overnight.

The attack is in response to the mortar shells that were fired at Israel, hitting the Eshkol Regional Council communities, during the past 24 hours, causing light injuries to two IDF soldiers.

More than 115 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israeli territory since the beginning of 2010, and over 420 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel since the end of operation Cast Lead.

Capt. Barak Raz Responds to Shameful Facebook Photos Uploaded by Discharged IDF Soldier, 17 Aug 2010

Capt. Barak Raz of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit responds to the disgraceful behavior of the former IDF soldier who uploaded shameful pictures to her Facebook profile.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQFAvv8Htrk]

The pictures show the soldier posing inappropriately next to Palestinians who had been arrested. The behavior displayed by this former soldier is not only disgraceful but in total opposition to the values and ethical code, “The Spirit of the IDF” which is the foundation of the  Israel Defense Forces. Any soldier who partakes in such an activity directly violates  the IDF’s code of conduct and will be dealt with severely.

The “Spirit of the IDF” is emphasized throughout every stage of each IDF soldier’s training periods. Its implementation is overseen and enforced by the officers and commanders in each unit. A copy of the code itself hangs in every IDF office. The following is a copy of “The Spirit of the IDF”, along with more information (from the official IDF website):

The IDF Spirit

The Israel Defense Forces are the state of Israel’s military force. The IDF is subordinate to the directions of the democratic civilian authorities and the laws of the state. The goal of the IDF is to protect the existence of the State of Israel and her independence, and to thwart all enemy efforts to disrupt the normal way of life in Israel. IDF soldiers are obligated to fight, to dedicate all their strength and even sacrifice their lives in order to protect the State of Israel, her citizens and residents. IDF soldiers will operate according to the IDF values and orders, while adhering to the laws of the state and norms of human dignity, and honoring the values of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.

Spirit of the IDF-Definition and Origins

The Spirit of the IDF is the identity card of the IDF values, which should stand as the foundation of all of the activities of every IDF soldier, on regular or reserve duty. The Spirit of the IDF and the guidelines of operation resulting from it are the ethical code of the IDF. The Spirit of the IDF will be applied by the IDF, its soldiers, its officers, its units and corps to shape their mode of action. They will behave, educate and evaluate themselves and others according to the Spirit of the IDF.

The Spirit of the IDF draws on four sources:

  • The tradition of the IDF and its military heritage as the Israel Defense Forces.
  • The tradition of the State of Israel, its democratic principles, laws and institutions.
  • The tradition of the Jewish People throughout their history.
  • Universal moral values based on the value and dignity of human life.

Basic Values:

Defense of the State, its Citizens and its Residents – The IDF’s goal is to defend the existence of the State of Israel, its independence and the security of the citizens and residents of the state.

Love of the Homeland and Loyalty to the Country – At the core of service in the IDF stand the love of the homeland and the commitment and devotion to the State of Israel-a democratic state that serves as a national home for the Jewish People-its citizens and residents.

Human Dignity – The IDF and its soldiers are obligated to protect human dignity. Every human being is of value regardless of his or her origin, religion, nationality, gender, status or position.

The Values:

Responsibility – The IDF serviceman or woman will see themselves as active participants in the defense of the state, its citizens and residents. They will carry out their duties at all times with initiative, involvement and diligence with common sense and within the framework of their authority, while prepared to bear responsibility for their conduct.

Credibility – The IDF servicemen and women shall present things objectively, completely and precisely, in planning, performing and reporting. They will act in such a manner that their peers and commanders can rely upon them in performing their tasks.

Personal Example – The IDF servicemen and women will comport themselves as required of them, and will demand of themselves as they demand of others, out of recognition of their ability and responsibility within the military and without to serve as a deserving role model.

Human Life – The IDF servicemen and women will act in a judicious and safe manner in all they do, out of recognition of the supreme value of human life. During combat they will endanger themselves and their comrades only to the extent required to carry out their mission.

Purity of Arms – The IDF servicemen and women will use their weapons and force only for the purpose of their mission, only to the necessary extent and will maintain their humanity even during combat. IDF soldiers will not use their weapons and force to harm human beings who are not combatants or prisoners of war, and will do all in their power to avoid causing harm to their lives, bodies, dignity and property.

Professionalism – The IDF servicemen and women will acquire the professional knowledge and skills required to perform their tasks, and will implement them while striving continuously to perfect their personal and collective achievements.

Discipline - The IDF servicemen and women will strive to the best of their ability to fully and successfully complete all that is required of them according to orders and their spirit. Sense of Mission – The IDF soldiers view their service in the IDF as a mission; They will be ready to give their all in order to defend the state, its citizens and residents. This is due to the fact that they are representatives of the IDF who act on the basis and in the framework of the authority given to them in accordance with IDF orders.

Two IDF Soldiers Lightly Injured in Rocket Attack, 17 Aug 2010

Two IDF soldiers were lightly injured from mortar shells fired by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip this morning, landing in the Eshkol Regional Council. The two were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment. An IDF force responded by firing at the source of the launches.

The mortar shells landed in the same area where just last night IDF soldiers thwarted an attack by an Islamic Jihad militant who planted an explosive device near the security fence.

Terrorist organizations generally use the area near the fence in order to plant explosives, plan attacks, and kidnapping attempts. The IDF holds Hamas responsible for terror emanating from the Gaza Strip.

Four rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip and have landed in Israel’s southern communities since last night, August 16th, 2010. Over 115 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israeli territory since the beginning of 2010, and over 400 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel since the end of Operation Cast Lead.

Islamic Jihad Militant Responsible for Death of IDF Officer and Soldier killed in Fire Exchange, 17 Aug 2010

Earlier today, in a joint IDF-ISA activity against the terror organization Islamic Jihad in the area of Khan Yunis, Basem Da’ama, was killed.  Da’ama, a resident of Absan, was a prominent field operative who took part in the March 26th fire exchange which resulted in the deaths of Maj. Eliraz Peretz and SSgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky.

An IDF force identified a group of Palestinian militants planting an explosive device near the security fence and opened fire at them, resulting in the death of one militant. One IDF soldier was lightly injured in the incident.

Terrorist organizations generally use the area near the fence in order to plant explosives, plan attacks, and kidnapping attempts, a fact that explains the IDF’s precaution in the area.
