IDF search and rescue forces continued their search for survivors of the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, last night. During the searches, teams from Nicaragua, Russia, and Venezuela were able to locate two girls who had been trapped in a collapsed building for more than five days.

The girls were evacuated to the Israeli Field Hospital, where they were treated. The first girl to be evacuated had serious injuries, and CNN Reporter Chris Lawrence took her in his truck to the hospital where she recieved life saving treatment. The second girl was in much better condition, with only minor injuries. Both are now in stable-good condition.

Despite Flooding, IAF Conducts Six Rescue and Evacuation Operations In Israel’s Southern Region

Today, the Israel Air Force conducted six rescue operations under harsh weather conditions and despite the severe  flooding in Israel’s southern region. Below are the details of the various rescue operations successfully conducted today:

1. Overnight, two IDF officers on routine activity were carried away in their vehicle by floodwaters in the Nitzana area, near the Israel-Egypt border.

2. A pregnant Bedouin woman was rescued this morning near the Faran River and evacuated to the nearest hospital.

3. Two truck drivers and a young boy injured in a car accident were also rescued this morning near the Faran River . After the evacuation they received medical treatment at an IAF military base in Ovda.

4. This afternoon, three Israeli civilians traveling in their vehicle were carried away by floodwaters in the Ein Yahav area. The IAF Rescue and Evacuation Unit, 669, rescued one civilian. An additional civilian died in the incident and one person is currently still missing.

5. Following an electrical blackout in Azuz, also in the Nitzana area this afternoon, two premature babies and a kidney-failure patient requiring medical treatment were evacuated to the nearest hospital.

6. This evening, four Israeli civilians carried by the flooding into Najal Hizba were rescued in a complex rescue operation and was evacuated by an IAF helicopter.

IAF helicopters and the 669 Rescue and Evacuation Unit are constantly prepared and continue to conduct life-saving activity daily. Additionally, entrance to the communities of Azuz, Kadesh Barneah and Nitzana were blocked to traffic. Equipment including generators, water tankers, food and dairy products were transferred to these communities by IDF forces from the Gaza Division in cooperation with the Ramat Negev and Eshkol regional councils.

Additional IDF Delegation Headed to Haiti Tonight, 18 January 2010

Additional IDF Delegation Headed by the OC Home Front Command Scheduled to Depart to Haiti Tonight

In order to assist in the ongoing relief efforts, an additional IDF aid delegation is scheduled to depart to Haiti overnight. The delegation will be headed by the OC Home Front Command, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan and will also include the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Eytan Chai-Am and Surgeon General, Brig. Gen., Nachman Ash.

The delegation will deliver relief reinforcements that include medicine and additional equipment. Upon its arrival, the delegation will examine the needs of the IDF medical staff on the scene.

The field hospital established by the IDF is one of the most advanced and includes a medical lab, pharmacy and an x-ray center. Approximately 200 patients were admitted to the hospital thus far, most of them in moderate condition. Furthermore, 25 life-saving surgeries and three births, one of which was the delivery of a 1.8 Kilogram premature baby, were carried out.

During the day, nine American volunteers from Los Angeles joined the Israeli delegation in the field hospital in addition to the ongoing cooperation with UN forces and other search and rescue units present in the disaster zone.

Two rescue crews led by the commanders of the Home Front Command Search and Rescue Unit are also operating in the disaster stricken area in effective cooperation with the local residents

A Haitian woman, eight months pregnant and in labor, arrived with her relatives at the IDF field hospital of the Home Front Command early this morning. The doctors delivered a healthy baby boy. After the birth, a relative suggested that the new mother name her son “Israel,” and she happily agreed.
