A Haitian woman, eight months pregnant and in labor, arrived with her relatives at the IDF field hospital of the Home Front Command early this morning. The doctors delivered a healthy baby boy. After the birth, a relative suggested that the new mother name her son “Israel,” and she happily agreed.

Video of the IDF field hospital in Haiti treating patients, including footage of the first baby to be delivered in the field hospital. Around 02:30-03:00 am a woman, who was 8 months pregnant, came to the field hospital accompanied by a friend. There, Maj. Doc. Shir Bar and Maj. Efrat Shrir helped her give birth to a healthy baby boy, who she named ‘Israel’.

The IDF field hospital in Haiti is currently treating over 100 survivors of the earthquake. They have performed 10 major surgeries, and roughly half of the patients are under the age of 16. The hospital has the capacity to treat up to 500 patients a day.

The IDF medical and rescue team in Port-au-Prince rescued a Haitian government worker on Saturday afternoon, who was trapped in the ruined customs office in the city. The man was trapped for 90 hours, before being evacuated in a moderate manner to the IDF field hospital. The evacuation lasted about 8 hours, and is the first rescue by IDF forces of a live survivor.

The IDF field hospital in Port-au-Prince was established in 8 hours on Saturday, and has treated more than 100 survivor. 30% of the injured in the hospital are defined severe, 50% are defined moderately injured and the rest are defined lightly injured. More than half of the injured are beneath the age of 16. The majority of injuries are limb injuries and bone fractures while 10 life saving surgeries were preformed.

IDF Thwarts Terror Attack in Nablus, 17 Jan 2010

In a joint Israel Defense Force-Israel Security Authority operation in Ain Beit Alma, Nablus, forces arrested several Palestinians who were planning a terrorist attack. The Palestinians were taken for security questioning after three handmade explosives were discovered. The devices were then detonated in a controlled manner.

IDF Search and Rescue teams in Port-au-Prince Haiti pulled a 52 year-old Hatian man from the rubble of a collapsed building. The team worked for 6 hours to extract the man, who was in good condition despite wounds on his limbs and dehydration. He had been trapped in the rubble for 4 days, and had managed to communicate his location to rescue forces via sms.

The IDF sent an aid delegation of over 220 search and rescue and medical personnel to assist in the rescue efforts following the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Search and rescue teams are working around the clock to extract victims trapped in the rubble and the IDF has constructed a field hospital capable of treating up to 500 people a day near the soccer field in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
