IDF Enforces Naval Blockade on Gaza

In accordance with the order made by the Defense Minister and current security assessments, as of Saturday January 3rd, 2009, the IDF has begun enforcing a naval blockade for 20 nautical miles from the Gaza Strip.

Gaza‘s shore is used by the Hamas terror organization, and the presence of its operatives on the shoreline and in the open sea constitutes a threat against the citizens of southern Israel.

Operation Cast Lead – Reserve Troops Drafted

As part of Operation Cast Lead, the IDF has begun to draft numerous reserve units in order to allow for the expansion of the operation.


The majority of the reservists called up belong to combat units, there also reservists from Home Front Command and the remainder belong to various other military units.

The reserve units are being drafted in accordance with the law and will be reporting for duty after having undergone extensive training over the past two years. At a number of the recruitment centers, the IDF is already implementing a project that is designed to replenish and renew emergency stores and military equipment. A special emphasis is also being placed on logistics support for the reserve units.

Second Stage of Operation Cast Lead Begins

A short while ago (Jan.3), IDF forces began to implement the second stage of Operation Cast Lead. Ground forces have begun to maneuver within the Gaza Strip.

The objective of this stage of the operation is to destroy the terrorist infrastructure of the Hamas in the precise area of operation, while taking control of some of rocket launching area used by the Hamas in order to greatly reduce the quantity of rockets fired at Israel and Israeli civilians.

The IDF Spokesperson emphasizes that this stage of the operation will further the goals of Operation Cast Lead as communicated till now: To strike a direct and hard blow against Hamas while increasing the deterrent strength of the IDF, in order to bring about an improved and more stable security situation for residents of southern Israel in the long term.

A large number of IDF forces are taking part in this stage of the operation including infantry, tanks, engineering forces, artillery and intelligence, along with the support of the Israel Air Force, Israel Navy, Israel Security Agency and other security agencies.

The operation is in accord with the decisions of the Security Cabinet. This stage of the operation is a part of the IDF’s overall operational plan, and will continue on the basis of ongoing situational assessments by the IDF General Staff.

The forces participating in the operation have been highly trained and were prepared for the mission over the long period that the operation was planned. The Commander of the operation is Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, GOC Southern Command.

The IDF and the Home Front Command has taken the necessary steps to protect the civilian population. All residents of Southern Israel are requested to follow the guidelines of the Home Front Command as communicated via the media.

The IDF Spokesperson wishes to reiterate that the residents of Gaza are not the target of the operation. Those who use civilians, the elderly, women and children as human shields are responsible for any and all injuries to the civilian population. Anyone who hides a terrorist or weapons in his house is considered a terrorist.

Based on a situational analysis, The IDF is taking steps to raise the level of alert for its forces in other areas of the country.

Rocket Statistics

  • Today, over 950,000 Israelis live within range of rocket and mortar attacks.
  • There have been approximately 7,200 rockets (Grads, Qassams) and mortars launched at Israel since 2005.
  • During 2008, there have been 1755 mortars shells, 1720 Qassams rockets, and 75 Grad missiles launched at Israel.
  • Since Hamas’ election there has been a steady increase of these rocket attacks against Israel’s citizens:
  • Between Israel’s evacuation of Gaza and the election of Hamas (Aug. 15, 2005 – Jan. 25, 2006), there was an average of over 15 rocket and mortar attacks a month.
  • Between Hamas’ election and Hamas’ forceful takeover of the Strip (Jan. 25, 2006 – June 14, 2007), there was an average of over 102 attacks per month—an over 650% increase.
  • Between Hamas’ takeover and the start of the Tahadiya (State of Calm), (June 14, 2007 – June 16, 2008), there was an average of over 361 attacks per month—an increase of an additional 350%.
  • On Nov. 4 – 5, Israel launched Operation “Double Challenge”, targeting a tunnel Hamas was building as part of a plan to kidnap Israeli soldiers.
  • From the end of Operation “Double Challenge” until the end of the Tahadiya, (Nov. 4 – Dec. 19, 2008) a period of only a month and a half, there were 170 mortars, 255 Qassams, and 5 Grads fired upon Israel’s civilian population centers.
  • Since the end of the Tahadiya (Dec. 19, 2009) until the beginning of Operation “Cast Lead,” (Dec. 27, 2008) a period of little more than a week, there were approximately 300 mortars and rockets fired onto Israel.
  • Since the begining of Operation ”Cast Lead”, there have been an additional 500 launches, 284 of which have been verified as rockets (both Qassams and Grads), and 113 as mortars.  

Cast Lead: Facts about Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

  • Since the beginning of operation “Cast Lead”, over 391 truckloads of aid carrying more than 6500 tons of aid (food, medicine, medical supplies) transferred into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.
  • The Erez Crossing has been opened in limited capacity to allow patients in need of emergency care to cross through.  This includes 12 emergency cases, which include two children, and they are now being treated in Israeli Hospitals.
  • At the request of their respective governments, Israel opened the Erez border crossing to allow 226 foreign and dual citizens to leave the Strip.
  • During the ceasefire, (June 16 – Dec 19, 2008) approximately 17,000 truckloads of aid were delivered, nearly double the 9,000 truckloads that Gaza had received in the five months prior. In addition to food, gas, and medicine, these truckloads carried in construction and industrial supplies.
  • Compared to 2007, 2008 saw a 20% increase in the number of patients receiving hospital care in Israel and abroad.

Today’s events: 40 Hamas sites targeted

  • IDF attacked over 40 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip - Integral parts of the Hamas terror organization’s infrastructure, including a training camp, weapons storage facility, smuggling tunnel, an armed rocket launcher and rocket launching bases
  • Terror groups launched over 14 Qassam rockets and Grad missiles towards Israel - One Grad missile hit an apartment building in the city of Ashdod, wounding two Israelis. A short time after the attack, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) identified and destroyed the launchers used in the attack.  More information about rocket attacks.
  • The Israeli Air Force struck a vehicle transporting Senior Hamas Commander Mohammed Ma’aruf and an additional Hamas operative in Khan Younis - Ma’aruf was part of Hamas’ military wing and served as an officer in the terror organization’s ground forces.

Yesterday, the IDF targeted 35 terrorist sites in the Gaza Strip.  The IDF will continue to operate against the Hamas terror organization and its infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

Summary of Overnight Events

During the night, the IAF attacked a vehicle in which Mamduq Jammal was driving. Jammal is a Hamas battalion commander who is also involved in rocket launching and is in charge of the rocket launching squads in the Gaza City area.

Other Hamas terrorist targets attacked by IAF aircraft during the night:

· A college building in El-Atatra used by Hamas for terrorist purposes. The college was a base for firing rockets at Israeli communities and was also used as a place of hiding and rocket assembly by Hamas operatives.

· The house of Hamas terror operative Ismail Renam in Bet-Lehiya, northern Gaza Strip, which functioned as a weaponry storage, specifically for rocket launching equipment. Renam has a central role in the launching of Grad type rockets against Israel.

· The house of Azadin Hadad, a Hamas terror operative in Gaza City, that was used to orchestrate terror activity and as a meeting place for terror operatives. Hadad is the head of the Hamas military group in Eastern Gaza city.

· A vehicle from which a Hamas operative loaded weapons into a storage place in Nuseirat.

The Israeli Navy also took part in the attacks, targeting a number of Hamas outposts, training camps and rocket launching sites.

Overall, more than 25 Hamas and other terrorist sites were attacked since yesterday evening. The forces reported accurate hits. All of the Israeli forces returned to their bases safely.

The IDF will continue to persistently strike any site used in Hamas’ terrorist effort and will not cease acting against all terror organizations and those who actively support them.
